HOLLYWOOD COVERAGE OF THE BOOK
THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE is a rousing, dramatic, and at times comical look at the web of complications that arise from promiscuity, adultery and lies. In many ways, the story is a unique one that touches on dark truths about all relationships, painting a complicated picture of contemporary Zimbabwe. The twists and turns keep building on top of complex and driven characters, and the story crescendos satisfactorily to an unexpected and dramatic climax. THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE has the potential to be adapted into either a film or TV series, both of which would resonate with audiences throughout the world.
Though theatre and film could both function as good media in which to adapt the novel, a TV series would likely be the best fit. The numerous detailed and layered stories of all of the characters, once appropriately expanded, would easily fill many episodes and seasons that would inevitably keep the audience glued to the screen. As the stories begin to intermingle, the episodic discoveries and conflicts only become more interesting and compelling. A TV series adaptation would maximize the best qualities of the book.
A great starting point for any adaptation of THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE is the characters, one of the strongest elements of the novel. Each character is driven by conflicting inner desires and emotions. Whereas most stories struggle simply to keep their characters in external conflict, the characters in this story have no difficulty running into problems. Their lives and relationships are predicated on lies, cheating, stealing and sex, and every move they make gets them into more trouble. The characters almost all exhibit unique and memorable qualities, and after all of their poor choices and moral challenges, the audience still empathizes with them. Though this novel reads more as an institutionalized or group-protagonist story, it might benefit from having one clear protagonist. This clarity will help build a compelling emotional arc as well as a narrative structure that will order all of the other subplots.
The concept and story of THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE are packed to the brim with interesting and unique ideas: all forms of sexual taboos are discovered and exposed, and many relationships – sexual and family – are taken to their extremes. The writer succeeds in creating scenes that visually jump to life and keep the audience in tension. One of those scenes, for instance, is the opening one, where Samantha sneaks into her maid’s room to catch her husband cheating, only to enter into an affair herself. In this regard, there is a great deal to work with for any possible adaptation of the book into a film or TV script. Nonetheless, the plot organization and subplot buildups would benefit from further development. Oftentimes, adapting original material into screen and teleplays requires cutting and rearranging the source material to increase the overall tension and buildup for the viewer. In THE TRAIL OF A PROMISCUOUS SPOUSE, for instance, a great deal of the stories are revealed in conversations and back story. Some of the overlapping stories, to keep the audience from disengaging would have to be rearranged and introduced at different times.
Though some minimal improvement is necessary for an adaptation of this novel, the details and unique point of view of the story contribute to its great potential. This look at the underbelly of relationships and society in contemporary Zimbabwe is quite original and will appeal to many audiences. If adapted, it could be marketed as a new “Desperate Housewives,” garnering attention from A-list actors and directors.
